A few years ago, I poured water just above a percolator in a brand-new Diamond rig when I heard a customer say, “You don’t look like you would work in a smoke shop.” As I drew air through the piece to test the rig’s function, I couldn’t help but giggle and say, “I hear that a lot.” I get it. Just imagine walking into a smoke shop and Lisa Simpson is helping you pick out the perfect dab rig. That’s literally me. I’m Lisa Simpson working in a Smokeshop.
It’s not just me though. Many times a customer has walked through the doors and at first glance, I thought the same thing. They don’t look like they would shop in the smoke shop…Teachers, firefighters, lawyers, mothers, young adults, grandparents, artists, baristas, and medical patients… so many people from different walks of life, strolling through our doors. Some novice and others that could teach me more about my job.
There is a stigma revolving around the smoke shop industry. I used to be embarrassed to tell people that I work at a smoke shop. I hated the judgmental look I would sometimes receive. In the past to avoid judgment, I reverted to saying, " I work in a medical supply store." Technically, I wasn’t lying since I 100% percent believe in the medical benefits of cannabis and the devices we sell to use it. Now, times are changing. Customers are coming in more open-minded and willing to visit our shop and see what we are all about. I recently told friends and family that I work at a smoke shop and I was surprised that I wasn’t judged as much as I thought. Instead, I had many people approach me about the products we sold. The next thing I know, I was supplying CBD topicals to a friend with arthritis, I was teaching a friend with cancer how to use a vaporizer and I was having smoke sessions with friends that I never knew smoked.
The Glass Warehouse is more than a Smokeshop. We strive to provide an environment that is welcoming to any type of customer. All the employees are friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Unlike most shops that are self-service, we are full service. Our employees happily provide detailed instructions and step by step tutorials on any smoking device or accessory.
It baffles me to think that commercials in the 90s typecasted people who smoke marijuana as deflated bodies on a couch and scrambled eggs in a frying pan. 30 years later we are still battling this stigma. It’s time to break down the stigma that holds us to the standard of typical hippy smokers. It’s time to acknowledge that your everyday pothead can be a CEO of a company, the girl next door, or the biggest nerd you have ever met. No matter who you are or where you come from, I encourage you to give us a chance… after all, we are just your everyday family.
